Vocalic Language
Vocalic language refers to the vocal characteristics and nuances that go beyond mere word choice, encompassing aspects like pitch, resonance, and vocal fold closure tension (weight). These vocal qualities play a profound role in gender expression, often signaling femininity even before specific words are recognized. For transwomen, aligning their vocalic language with their identified gender can be pivotal for feeling authentically represented and avoiding misgendering in daily interactions.
Verbal Language
Verbal language encompasses the words we choose, the phrases we employ, and the speech patterns we adopt in communication. Cultural and societal norms often associate certain styles of speaking with femininity. In the context of gender expression, mastering these verbal nuances can be integral. By using feminine verbal language, transwomen and transgirls can further enhance their authentic self-presentation, fostering a deeper sense of belonging and validation in social interactions.
Nonverbal Language
Nonverbal language encompasses the gestures, facial expressions, and body language accompanying our speech, and it plays a subtle yet powerful role in conveying gender cues. For male-to-female individuals, aligning nonverbal communication with their identified gender can greatly influence the perception of their voice and overall femininity. The subtle tilt of the head, the way one holds their hands, or the rhythm of a gesture can either reinforce or contradict the femininity of the voice, making mastery of nonverbal cues crucial in holistically presenting one's authentic self.

I am FTM and my voice was very high. I wanted to make my voice lower and Seth helped me with that. He also showed me how to change my way of talking like making sure my voice isn’t just low but also sounds masculine.
My voice was totally wrong!
I love doing my make up and wearing cute outfits and I am totally passing but as soon as I opened my mouth it would all fall apart! It’s a long process but now I feel like I am closer to really being myself! I love my new voice!
Keri makes sure I always feel safe. Some days I even just need to talk and she always listens. I have a lot of depression and anxiety and some times I just can’t work hard and Keri never makes me feel bad when I don’t do my homework. She understands.
